Estriol Anti-Wrinkle Cream

Low Dose Hormone Cream Reduces Wrinkles

Aging is a process associated with a decline in the function of all organ systems. The skin is the largest organ of the human body and it is notably affected by aging. Cutaneous aging is characterized by atrophy, wrinkling, dryness, increased laxity and poor wound healing. It is influenced by several factors including genetics, cumulative sun exposure and hormonal status.  Declining levels of hormones, especially estrogen, are associated with the aging process. Postmenopausal women who utilize estrogen supplementation tend to have lower wrinkle scores, less xerosis and relatively thicker skin than women not receiving hormone replacement therapy.

The majority of studies have shown estrogen supplementation in postmenopausal women to increase skin thickness, skin collagen content, or both.  Topical estriol and progesterone preparations have been shown to improve wrinkle depth, elasticity, pore size, and skin firmness. Combinations are also effective. A cream of estrogen and glycolic acid has been shown to increase skin thickness more than either product alone.

In a study of 59 preclimacteric women, demonstrated significant decreases in wrinkle measurements by profilometry after treatment with either estradiol or  estriol applied directly to the face for 6 months. On immunohistochemistry, significant increases of Type III collagen labeling were combined with increased numbers of collagen fibers at the end of the treatment period. As to hormone levels, only prolactin had increased significantly and no systemic hormonal side effects were noted.

A 2005 study demonstrated consistent superiority of 2% progesterone cream over placebo vehicle in counteracting different signs of aging in the skin of peri- and postmenopausal women. Clinical monitoring observed higher reductions in wrinkle counts and wrinkle depth around the eye, higher decrease in nasolabial wrinkle depth and a significantly higher improvement of skin firmness in the treatment group. 2% progesterone cream also yielded significant improvements in the objective measurement of different parameters of skin viscoelasticity and elasticity compared to the vehicle group. No serious side effects of the treatment were observed.
