Vitamins are organic substances that are essential in small amounts for the health, growth, reproduction, and maintenance of one or more animal species, which must be included in the diet since they cannot be synthesized at all or in sufficient quantity in the body. Each vitamin performs a specific function, hence one cannot replace another. Vitamins originate primarily in plant tissues. United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) synthetic vitamin isolates are not naturally “included in the diet”, they do not necessarily “originate primarily in plant tissues”, nor have all of them been proven to safely and fully replace all natural vitamin activities. USP vitamins are useful for correcting specific vitamin deficiencies but may not be the best choice for supplementing the broad range of vitamins and minerals our bodies need on a daily basis.
The human body needs a broad spectrum of nutrients to maintain optimal health. Eating to stay healthy is not as easy as it seems. A study in the July 16, 1999, issue of Science reports that people living in the United States and other industrialized nations often fail to obtain recommended daily minimums of essential nutrients. This is despite the fact that meals contain a nearly endless variety of food.
Research reveals an enhanced physiological response is obtained from moderate amounts of a broad spectrum of foods and food compounds. This broad spectrum of moderate supplemental and nutritive components provides greater health benefits than large amounts of one isolated supplement fraction or the isolated active constituents of a plant.
Studies suggest that the bioavailability of natural food complex vitamins is better than that of most isolated USP vitamins, that they may have better effects on maintaining aspects of human health beyond traditional vitamin deficiency syndromes, and at least some seem to be preferentially retained by the human body. It is not always clear if these advantages are due to the physiochemical form of the vitamin, with the other food constituents that are naturally found with them, or some combination. Regardless, it seems logical to conclude that for purposes of maintaining normal health, whole food vitamins are superior to synthetic ones.
