There is no standard definition of a “Specialty” medication but medications are generally considered specialty based on the following criteria:
- A drug that involves a complex manufacturing process or is difficult to produce such as a monoclonal antibody or other biologic drug.
- A drug that requires special handling, storage or administration procedures.
- A drug that is specific to a certain disease state or has limited uses.
- A drug that is high cost and requires thorough investigation of a patient’s pharmacy benefits, major medical coverage guidelines and manufacturer assistance programs to secure coverage.
