10 Mar It All Starts in the Gut
Many people fail to realize that 80% of the body’s immune system is in the gut. After this winter of rampant illness, we are all concerned about how well our body can fight disease causing organisms, but we also need to make sure that our immune system is not attacking our own body. The GI system can suffer from 2 main types of disorders affected by nutrition: 1) dysbiosis (excessive colonization of the gut by undesirable microorganisms) and 2) intestinal permeability or leaky gut.
Dysbiosis can cause food allergies/sensitivities, atopic eczema, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), unexplained fatigue, mental/emotional disorders, and inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. The main cause of dysbiosis is antibiotic use. When we treat infections with chemicals that kill bacteria, we end up killing a lot of the good bacteria that help our gut to break down our food into basic amino acids and nutrients that our body can utilize. If we allow our gut to function without the millions of good bacteria lining our GI tract, we can easily start to suffer from any of the above listed ailments. The solution is simple. Replace the good bacteria with a high-quality probiotic. We recommend Florajen-3. It is a high potency freeze-dried live strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium lactis and Bifidobacterium longum. It is recommended to take 1-2 capsules daily on an empty stomach.
Leaky gut can cause bloating, food sensitivities, thyroid conditions, fatigue, joint pain, headaches, acne, rosacea and weight gain. Leaky gut can be the result of chronic dysbiosis. Other causes of leaky gut are poor diet, chronic stress and toxin overload. Imagine your first line of defense against all the unhealthy st
uff that we put in our mouth, whether intentionally or not, has multiple gaps where toxins, undigested food and pathogens can enter directly into the bloodstream. Your body will need to chronically develop an inflammatory response to attack the unfamiliar substances. If your body continues to be on heightened alert, constantly attacking anything coming through the gut wall, it will eventually start attacking normal tissue leading to autoimmune disorders.
Many times, we are encouraged to medicate away our symptoms. Wouldn’t it be great if we could manage our diseases and ailments by altering our diet and helping our bodies’ function better naturally?
